Nearly two weeks ago I took a trip across the Atlantic to New York, a place I fell in love with 10 years ago. I don’t know why I love it, I just do. There’s so much to see and do in New York, that a week just isn’t long enough, so we made a plan for each day of what we wanted to do/see and made sure we stuck to it. The only stipulation I had was that I could take as many photos as I wanted, with no subject/theme in mind – just what the city could throw at me. And take photos I did! Unfortunately I can’t show you them all on here, there’s too many, but I’ve posted lots over on Instagram. Here’s just a sample of some of my favourites.

Partway through the week I realised I’d been experimenting with the panorama setting on my phone, and had built up a collection of panoramic views of my favourite places…

We visited lots of the touristy spots as my boyfriend has never been before, but that didn’t matter to me, I wanted to take advantage of this and capturing lot’s of photos.

One of my favourite places, or should I say buildings, not just in New York, but the world (that sounds a bit dramatic doesn’t it!) is the Empire State building. I have a love affair with it and needless to say I took few, ok a lot, of photos of this wonderful, art deco styled building.

During our trip we walked a lot, making sure we took in the eclectic sights and sounds of this incredible city, we even saw a few movie stars along the way!

We’re both now planning (hoping) when we can go back and explore this vibrant city some more!

On my next trip to New York, I have one thing on my to do list – visit the High Line.

The High Line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line, high above the New York streets of Manhattan’s West Side. Along this stretch of 1.45 miles of park there are places of tranquility to take in the sights of New York, gardens and flowers to admire, and New York’s famous buildings to photograph.

The High Line looks stunning at any time of day, and visiting at dusk is the perfect opportunity to view the High Line in a constant changing light and appreciate it in all it’s glory.

If you visit New York, this is one place you have to visit.

The food theme carries on for my next post in my New York Series, again I was instantly captured by the brilliantly designed website for this restaurant. They go by the name of The Meatball Shop and they serve, well…. meatballs! Started by two friends Daniel and Michael, the mix and match meatball menu became an instant hit in their home city of New York, where they now have 4 locations, each decorated with a wonderfully warm and rustic interior.

I’ve been a little obsessed with these guys for a while now and I can’t even remember how I found them, I just remember being taken in by their website and by how their photo’s drew me in. They are the main feature throughout their website, and you could almost say The Meatball Shop let’s the photo’s do the talking, what more do you need?! This works well and you immediately want to find out more.

As for the food… just visit their Instagram page and you’ll see how mouthwateringly delicious it looks.

This is already on my places to visit list on my next trip to New York.

I have something a little different for my New York Series now, I’ve got a wonderful New York restaurant to share with you, which I was firstly drawn to by their design, and then by their wonderful seafood and vegetable menu.

Navy restaurant is situated amongst tree lined streets in Soho and created by Matt Abramcyk, Akiva Elstein and Chef Camille Becerra, with a maritime World War Two interior.

As a graphic designer I was instantly taken by their wonderfully designed website, which is simple yet striking, with beautiful clean lines, getting across the styling of their restaurant instantly. The blue hues fused with striking whites and delicious food photography left me wanting more. This is their homepage…

For the design alone this is one restaurant I would like to try when I next visit New York. I’m lured in by their style and the fact they seem to really care about what they are offering. Just take a look at the presentation of their main menu, delightfully handwritten, which again gets my design juices flowing.

If their website and menu hasn’t intrigued you enough, then head to their Instagram page where they post daily photos of their culinary creations and quirky restaurant details, all with the same wonderful, dark tones which match the aesthetics of the Navy.

I’m sold.

As part of my New York Series, I have another wonderful New York photographer I’d like to share with you. Luc Jean-Baptiste is a fellow Instagrammer who I’ve been following for a long time. His photo’s offer an urban feel of New York; he’s your man on the ground capturing everything this city has to offer. Looking through his photos you get a great sense of life here, from the people who call this city home, to the hustle and bustle of the noisy streets. This is New York at her truest form.

Luc’s passion for photography started when instagram was first created. “It’s such a quick way to display your photos and get an immediate response from people.”

“My favourite thing to photograph in NYC are the taxis, they are instantly recognisable as being from NYC”

If you have Instagram I would recommend following Luc, his photos can be found on his Instagram page and as well as his VSCO website.

Whilst researching for my New York series I came across a wonderful photographer on Behance, Navid Baraty. His work instantly caught my eye and I couldn’t wait to share his work with you.

Navid is a Brooklyn based photographer who gave up a job in engineering to pursue a career in a passion of his, photography. He is drawn to photography by its ability to stop time and reveal unexpected details that the eye may miss.

Whilst photographing for various publications and clients, Navid also likes to shoot what’s around him in his hometown of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The collection of photo’s that first drew me to Navid’s photography were his Intersection photos, they are truly stunning, and give you the best perspective and understanding of the height of New York’s famous skyscrapers. Here are some of his intersection photo’s and to view more visit www.navidbaraty.com

Amongst his intersection photography, Navid also captures New York in all her glory. From the instantly recognisable skyline to the everyday details that we take for granted, he captures them in such a way that we stop and really take in the story they have to tell.
